Parking & Transportation - Golden Eagles Share the Road

Golden Eagles Share the Road

Pedestrian Safety • Driver Awareness • Bicycle and Personal Mobility Device Safety

Students, faculty, staff, and visitors share campus roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and crosswalks every day. By staying alert and following safety practices, we can create a safer environment for everyone on campus.

Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users on campus. Help keep yourself and others safe by following these guidelines:

  • Use marked crosswalks whenever available.
  • Obey pedestrian signals and traffic signs.
  • Avoid distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, or wearing headphones at high volume while crossing streets.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking at night.
  • Stay on sidewalks and designated pedestrian pathways.

Remember:

Many areas of campus experience heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic between classes. Take a few extra seconds to cross safely.

Driver Awareness

Drivers play an important role in maintaining a safe campus environment.

  • Obey all Tennessee Tech speed limits and traffic regulations.
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Remain alert in parking lots and near residence halls where pedestrians are common.
  • Avoid distracted driving, including texting or using a mobile device while operating a vehicle.
  • Watch for bicycles, scooters, and pedestrians when turning or backing up.
  • Stop completely at stop signs and obey all campus traffic control devices.

Remember:

Students may unexpectedly enter crosswalks between classes. Drive cautiously and be prepared to stop.

Bicycle and Personal Mobility Device Transportation Safety

Bicycles and Personal Mobility Devices provide an efficient way to travel around campus, but safety should always come first.

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet.
  • Use front and rear lights during low-light conditions.
  • Follow all traffic signs and signals.
  • Ride in the same direction as vehicle traffic.
  • Yield to pedestrians on shared-use pathways.
  • Secure bicycles to designated bike racks when not in use.

Remember:

Bicyclists and users of personal mobility devices share responsibility for roadway safety and are expected to obey the same traffic laws and regulations as motorists.

Safety Is Everyone's Responsibility

Creating a safe campus requires cooperation from pedestrians, drivers, bicyclists, and riders of mobility devices.

By:

  • Staying alert
  • Respecting traffic laws
  • Watching for others
  • Practicing courtesy and patience
