Ethics and Professionalism

The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) Code of Ethics states, “Engineering is an important and learned profession. As members of this profession, engineers are expected to exhibit the highest standards of honesty and integrity. Engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people. Accordingly, the services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity, and must be dedicated to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare. Engineers must perform under a standard of professional behavior that requires adherence to the highest principles of ethical conduct.”

Induction into the Profession Ceremony

At the end of each semester, the College of Engineering offers a special ceremony called the Induction to the Profession Ceremony to recognize its graduating students and induct them into the Order of the Engineer, Order of Engineering Technology and the Pledge of the Computing Professional, based on their majors. These rites of passage for graduating engineers, engineering technologists and computing professionals involve taking oaths in which graduates profess their commitment to ethical conduct in their professions and foster a sense of pride and responsibility.

Participation is voluntary and students must register in advance. Please note that this is a separate ceremony from commencement.

The ceremony for Spring 2026 graduating seniors will be held Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. in the Ashraf Islam Engineering Building Atrium. Graduates for Spring 2026 receive information to register via email. Students must register in person in AIEB 325 no later than May 5, 2026 to participate in the ceremony.
