While the SGA provides crucial avenues for self-governance and advocacy, numerous other valuable opportunities exist across the university for you to contribute, develop new skills, and connect with the campus community.

Moderate: Bi-monthly Senate meetings, bi-monthly committee meetings, communication with constituents. One (1) Academic Year
Executive Cabinet
  • Manages specific operational areas related to student concerns (internal ops, comms, technology, environmental programs, etc.)
  • Advises Executive Council
  • Carries out other initiatives as needed.
  • Precise duties listed in Policies Manual
Appointed by newly elected Executive Council in the Spring, confirmed by 2/3 Senate vote.

Moderate to High: Cabinet & Senate meetings, project management, reporting to Senate. Approx. one (1) Academic Year (Confirmation to next Council swearing-in)
Executive Council

  • Drafts and ensures compliance with budget (Treasurer)
  • Oversees records and legislation management (Secretary)
  • Presides over Senate (Vice President)
  • Approves/vetoes legislation (President)
  • Liaises w/ admin (all)
Elected by the entire student body during the Spring General Election.
  • President/Vice President:

    • Junior Standing @ start of term
    • 1 year of prior SGA service
    • 3.00+ GPA
  • Secretary/Treasurer:
    • Full-time status
    • Sophomore Standing @ start of term

High: Regular Executive Council & Senate meetings (Vice President/Secretary), committee service, office hours, admin meetings, events. Approx. one (1) Academic Year (Swearing-in during late Spring to next Council swearing-in).
Supreme Court (Chief Justice, Associate Chief Justice, 7 Associate Justices)
  • Hear cases under Constitution/Policies Manual
  • Review branch actions
  • Ensure due process (impeachment)
  • Serve as Student Citation Appeals Committee
Nominated by Commission for Nominations, confirmed by 2/3 Senate vote. (CJ/ACJ elected internally by Court)

  • Impartiality & analytical skills essential
Low-Moderate: Biweekly Court meetings, occasional case prep/deliberation, and parking appeals hearings (during biweekly meetings). From confirmation until graduation or loss of qualification.
Attorney General
  • Chief legal advisor
  • Ensures compliance
  • Investigates misconduct
  • Interprets internal documentation
  • Serves as Supreme Court Secretary/Reporter/Parliamentarian
Appointed by the Supreme Court from outside its membership. Serves at the pleasure of the Court.
  • Full/Part-time status
  • Sophomore Standing @ start of term
  • 2.75+ GPA
  • Strong understanding of SGA's governing documents critical
Moderate to High: Attends Court meetings, advises branches, research/investigations as necessary, maintains Court records. Until successor appointed, or resignation/removal.
When Do These Positions Typically Become Available?
  • Spring Semester: The main General Election is held for the four Executive Council positions (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) and all Academic Senator positions for the following academic year. Look for information from the Commission for Elections starting mid-semester.
  • Late Spring/Early Summer: Following the election, the new Executive Council appoints members to the Executive Cabinet. Application processes are typically announced then.
  • Beginning of Fall Semester: Appointments are often made for Freshman Senators (from the First Year Assembly) and Transfer Senators. Various Committee/Commission memberships are also finalized.
  • Throughout the Year: Vacancies can occur unexpectedly in any branch (e.g., due to graduation, resignation, study abroad). These vacancies are typically filled by appointment through the Commission for Nominations (for Senate/Judicial) or the Executive Council (for Cabinet), subject to Senate confirmation where required.
