Student Government Association - S.O.L.O. Funding Committee

S.O.L.O. Funding Committee

The S.O.L.O. Funding Committee is the Senate’s standing body that reviews every request for S.O.L.O. General Fund dollars, interviews applicants, and recommends an award - or denial - to the Senate. The Committee's mission is to drive fair, transparent, and student‑first funding decisions.

What the Committee Does

  • Support events that benefit the entire student body or help RSOs grow.
  • Allocate limited funds equitably and efficiently.
  • Safeguard student fees through clear criteria, open hearings, and published reports.

Who Sits on the Committee

Role Method of Selection Voting Power Notes
SGA Treasurer Elected campus wide, serves ex officio Chairs the committee as per S.B. F24-005
Six Senators Appointed by the Executive Council Must be members of different colleges/schools
Staff Advisor Designated by the Division of Student Affairs Provides fiscal compliance guidance

How We Evaluate Your Request

All applications are scored against the following five criteria set by Senate Bill F24‑005:

  • Alignment with Tech’s mission
  • Campus impact & accessibility
  • Financial need of the RSO
  • Past stewardship of S.O.L.O. funds (if applicable)
  • Event innovation & collaboration

Priority goes to new, high‑impact, multi‑org events.

Funding Limits

  • Standard cap: $2,000 per event.
  • Awards above the cap require an “exceptional benefit” vote of two‑thirds of the Senate.
  • The Senate may lower the semester cap at the start of a fiscal year by majority vote

Meeting & Hearing Schedule

The Committee meets bi‑weekly on Thursdays at 5 PM during fall and spring terms.

  • Application deadline: 4:30 PM the preceding Wednesday
  • Applicants receive a calendar invite 24 hours before the hearing
  • Hearings last ~10 minutes (quick pitch + Q&A)

Upcoming dates appear in the "Dates and Deadlines" section on the S.O.L.O. Funds page.

Decision & Reporting Process

  • After each meeting, the Committee files a consent‑calendar report to the Senate. Requests under 50% of the cap are automatically approved unless a Senator objects; larger or contested items are debated and voted on.
  • RSOs may appeal a sub‑50% decision to the full Senate; however, doing so may delay funding to the next Senate meeting.

Accountability & Compliance

  • Committee members must disclose conflicts and recuse when necessary
  • Misuse of funds can result in repayment, a suspension from future funding, and referral to the Dean of Students
  • All decisions are archived for public review in accordance with the SGA Constitution.
